How's Your Mental Health These Days?

Something I have seen more and more this past year is moms struggling with their mental health. Maybe there’s really been an increase or maybe 2020 has just given more moms permission to talk about it, but many of us feel overloaded right now just trying to figure out how to do our daily lives with the changes all around us and concern for the future on the horizon. That’s why I loved the timing of the conversation we had this past week on Wire Talk with my new friend, Wendi Nunnery. Wendi struggled with OCD - obsessive compulsive disorder - for years, but after she had a child it became apparent that she needed help and she sought out counseling.

Let me pause right there to just say that moms, sometimes we need outside help and there is ZERO shame in seeking it out. Abby and I went to a counselor together when she was in high school because we were struggling in our relationship and it was the best thing. Pray about it, yes, read your Bible yes, but get some professional help too when you know you’re stuck. Okay…back to Wendi!

Wendi said that as she went through counseling she learned the difference between perfection and holiness.  During our conversation she said, “Perfection is what we try, and fail, to attain. Holiness is what we’ve already received.” Did you catch that? Read it again: perfection is what we try, and fail, to attain. Holiness is what we’ve already received. What a beautiful thought that in Christ we are already perfect because of Him. I love that. I think so many moms would benefit in realizing that we are good enough. No, we’re not perfect. We are humans and each of us is in the process of Christ teaching us and working through us.

If you struggle with your thoughts these days, or if this year has you feeling defeated or permanently down, talk to someone. It doesn’t have to be a counselor, you can start with a friend. But let someone in on what’s going on in your life. If that’s where you are right now, I think this conversation with Wendi will really encourage you - so listen to our Wire Talk conversation and enter our giveaway on Instagram for a copy of Wendi’s new book, Good Enough: Letting Go of Perfect for the Sake of Holy.
