Waiting Expectantly

If you could pick a motto for our day and age, I think it would be “now, now, now!” Instant gratification is truly possible when it comes to so many things these days. You can watch almost any show or movie in the world, anytime you want to thanks to on demand TV. You can pull up songs by your favorite musician instantly, whether you’re in the car or on an airplane. Stores are open 24 hours a day and if we don’t feel like going out, Amazon or UberEats will bring whatever it is we want right to our door. We are accustomed to getting what we want almost immediately nowadays. And because we can have what we want when we want it in a lot of areas, I think our kids and even us as moms fall prey to the lie that we can have everything we want when we want it. But that is a LIE, moms, plain and simple. You can’t have it all right now.

In the book of Psalms, David talks about waiting a lot. And David knew a thing or two about waiting from his own life. After God told Samuel to anoint David king over Israel, David still had to wait 7 years to become king. 7 years! And they were hard years, years of war and hardship. Have you ever waited 7 years for something God promised? That’s a long time moms. Over and over again David reminds us to wait on the Lord. He instructs us to wait patiently, to wait expectantly, and to wait with hope. I especially love Psalm 5:3 “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”

There is a lot of truth in the saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” We have a heavenly Father who loves us and wants to give us good things, but at the right time moms. As I walk through my home thinking how this applies in my own life, I pass “treasures” that have been accumulated over many decades of life.  It takes time to fill a house with furniture, art, rugs, and accessories. And It takes even longer when you have children in the mix because children drain the bank account!

No one likes to wait. We all wish training our children in obedience or creating a welcoming home came as easily and quickly as an Amazon Prime order. But it takes time to teach a toddler to obey, and it takes time to save up for furniture that you love. And that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It just means some things in life aren’t “on demand".”

Regardless of where you are today, realize, “Good things do come for those who wait," because you have a heavenly Father who loves to give good things to you. While you are waiting, work on getting happy with where you are right now and enjoy the journey. Pray that God would teach you how to wait patiently, expectantly, and with hope. For the rest of 2021, what if our motto was, “lay your requests before Him and wait expectantly.”?
